Background information[]
In "The Big Goodbye", an illustration of a Kaferian was briefly seen when Data was assimilating the Dixon Hill novels. The caption for the illustration identified the being as a "Kaferian". This illustration was from the FASA RPG module The Federation.
In the Star Trek: Star Charts (p. 44), their homeworld was Tau Ceti III, which was known to the locals as Kaferia. They were listed as a Federation member in 2378.
Apocrypha[]
In The Worlds of the Federation (p. 112), their homeworld, Kaferia, orbited Tau Ceti. They were depicted as being extremely friendly and close to the Federation but not members. They are shown to have two arms and two legs.
In the novel Second Nature, they are shown to have six limbs. The novel probes into the Kaferian culture, describing them as sleeping in cocoon-like hibernation sacs filled with regenerative jelly. They don't eat flesh, and their diet consists almost entirely of fruit sugars. This was in contrast to the novel Fear Itself, where they were described as predatory arthropods.
