Kelis' species were a primitive humanoid species native to Kelis' homeworld, a Class L planet located in the Delta Quadrant. Individuals of the species believed in the existence of beings whom they referred to as Eternals. They also at one point sacrificed people yearly in honor of winter but this practice had ended by 2376.

They considered bleeding the preferred treatment for fever.

They possessed some limited metallurgical technology shown by their ability to produce the simple alloy bronze. They could also work with tin, copper and gold. The latter was expensive to procure. Their planet boasted large deposits of dilithium which they referred to as Winter's tears. Kelis knew of only one deposit in his area and it was located on his Autarch's hunting grounds. Trespassing there would result in execution.

Power was in the hands of rivaling Autarchs, who were constantly at each other's throats, bickering over territory, raiding each other's land, and starting wars whenever they could be guaranteed of good weather. This was to the depriment of the people. In 2376, one Autarch was insulted by his enemy from the north, and opened the Armories. The situation could be diffused before a battlefield was chosen however.

Autarchs might act as patrons to poets, sponsoring plays. By 2376, the tradition of poets was already ancient, though one older actor felt that the poets had become lazy, relying on manipulation to move their audience. Kelis felt that plays changed things for the better, citing his performance space which a hundred years ago had been a temple where a person was sacrificed each year. (VOY: "Muse")

Their style was very similar to the theater of ancient Greece, most tellingly through the use of a chorus.

By 2376, members of this species had apparently been assimilated by the Borg. (VOY: "Unimatrix Zero", "Unimatrix Zero, Part II")

The Borg child that appeared to be a member of Kelis' species refers to having been assimilated in "His father's ship". Since Kelis' species still seemed pre-warp when Voyager encountered them the nature of this ship seems unsure.
