Enterprise's warp core

The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is a laboratory devoted to scientific and technological applications for national security. [1]

Scenes in the USS Enterprise's main engineering area were filmed at its National Ignition Facility, or NIF, for Star Trek Into Darkness used as the set for the warp core of the Enterprise. A facility of the US government, the site's goal at the time was to study the possibility of igniting nuclear fusion. As such, filming in the facility was conducted under tight security. As a prank, Simon Pegg convinced members of the cast that it was necessary to apply a specialized "neutron cream" while filming at the facility to protect from dangerous radiation. (Star Trek Into Darkness (Blu-ray) deluxe edition special feature - "Safety First")
