A lighter in use
A lighter was a device filled with flammable liquid that was ignited by friction.
In 2364, McNary lit Jean-Luc Picard's cigarette while the latter was playing the title role in the Dixon Hill holographic novel The Big Good-Bye. (TNG: "The Big Goodbye")
In 2381, Toz carried around a lighter so that she could smoke when she felt extreme stress. (LD: "Room for Growth") Vice Admiral Les Buenamigo also used a lighter on a cigar, though he seemingly did as a form of celebration, rather than of stress relief. (LD: "The Stars At Night")
Captain Cristóbal Rios used a seemingly advanced type of lighter to light his cigar on several occasions in 2399. (PIC: "The End is the Beginning", "Stardust City Rag", "Nepenthe")
