Verbal communication was the act of communicating using one's voice rather than actions (non-verbal communication). One who was incapable of speaking thusly could be enabled to do so with a vocal enhancer. (TNG: "Dark Page")

According to Jean-Luc Picard, Commander Flaherty's skill in linguistics was such that he was capable of "instantaneously interpreting and extrapolating any verbal communication that he hears". In 2365, Picard felt sure that if William T. Riker accepted command of the USS Aries, Flaherty, the starship's first officer, would be particularly invaluable in sector Vega-Omicron. In 2370, despite the efficiency of Cairn telepathy, Lwaxana Troi noted that they were aware they would have to (learn to) communicate verbally if they wished to join the Federation. (TNG: "Dark Page")

In 2374, Kathryn Janeway rejected the Borg's temporary neural link as she preferred to communicate verbally, much to the Borg's distaste, as they found it to be a primitive and inefficient mode of communicating. (VOY: "Scorpion, Part II")

In 2376, Seven of Nine noted that she and Tuvok had spent two hours, thirty-seven minutes, and thirteen seconds without verbal communication. When the Vulcan asked her why she made note of that, she explained that The Doctor encouraged her to fill silences with conversation. (VOY: "Tsunkatse")
