For the nautical term "to list" or "listing", please see Listing.
A list was a sequential grouping of items that all had something in common.
In 2268, upon hearing from USS Enterprise's computer that there were nine eyewitnesses to Kodos' atrocities, James T. Kirk asked it to give a list. The list included Kirk himself, Thomas Leighton, E. Molson, Kevin Riley, and D. Eames before Kirk interrupted the computer upon his recognition of (Enterprise crewmember) Riley's name. (TOS: "The Conscience of the King")
In 2377, Neelix had already composed a list of propsective names for Tom Paris and B'Elanna Torres's baby. (VOY: "Lineage")
