Lower deck ensigns Mariner, Tendi, Boimler, and Rutherford perform menial work to keep the ship operational.
"Lower decks" or lower deckers were nicknames for the junior officers aboard a starship, who typically lived and worked on that ship's lower decks.
In 2380, Ensign D'Vana Tendi was coldly welcomed aboard the USS Cerritos by Lieutenant Dirk who instructed her to "keep it movin', lower decks." Aboard the ship, Ensigns Beckett Mariner, Brad Boimler, Sam Rutherford, and Tendi reclaimed the term to describe their group proudly, on one occasion chanting "Lower decks! Lower decks!" in the ship's bar. (LD: "Second Contact")
In 2382, after being promoted to provisional first officer of the Cerritos along with Mariner, Boimler protested that they were just lower decks. Captain Jack Ransom then corrected Boimler that he and Mariner were now in charge of the lower decks. (LD: "The New Next Generation")
