The Lumerians were a humanoid species from the Lumerian homeworld, with distinctive markings at their hairline and empathic abilities, though these abilities were usually restricted to other Lumerians and empaths.

Some Lumerians were able to ritually form a psionic bond with another empath, giving him or her the option to "dump" bad feelings and other "mental waste" onto the bond partner. The recipient would suffer from accelerated aging and aggressive behavior and elevated levels of neurotransmitter residue in the cerebral cortex. The ritual was performed with the help of a crystalline stone, that seemed to enhance the psionic output of the ritual participants.

93 years of age was considered elderly by late 24th century medicine.

Ambassador Alkar claimed that an autopsy on an individual he falsely claimed was his mother was against Lumerian custom, though this may have been to cover up his deception.

Lumerians performed a funeral meditation which usually involved a partner, and speaking in the Lumerian language. (TNG: "Man of the People")

While parts of the funeral meditation may have been an element of Alkar's deception, Liva did not seem to find it unusual.
