Lya III was the inhabited third planet in its star system. This system, in Sector 30/489, was located near the Giles Belt and the Nel Bato system. This planet was home to a Federation starbase administered by Starfleet. Subspace messages sent from this starbase to ships positioned near the outpost Sierra VI, which was located on the Federation side of the Romulan Neutral Zone, had a delay time of two hours and twenty-two minutes.

In 2366, Vice Admiral Haden was assigned to this starbase. During the Nelvana Incident, he was the representative of Starfleet Command and sent messages to Captain Picard aboard the USS Enterprise-D. (TNG: "The Defector")

Later that year, after completing its mission at Angosia III, Lya III was the destination of the Enterprise-D. (TNG: "The Hunted")

This planet was only mentioned in dialogue.
This planet's quadrant of origin is inferred from it being in Sector 30, which contained a section of the Romulan Neutral Zone. This zone was canonically located in the Beta Quadrant in the Star Trek: Picard episode "The Impossible Box".
According to Star Trek: Star Charts (p. 47) and Stellar Cartography: The Starfleet Reference Library ("Federation Historical Highlights, 2161-2385"), the Lya system was a binary system with a pair of A-class stars, located in the Alpha Quadrant.
