Resembling a lyre, Lyra was a constellation visible from Earth's northern hemisphere. The brightest star in the constellation was Vega. Astronomical objects in this constellation were located in the Alpha Quadrant. (SNW: "The Serene Squall")

The name of this constellation was derived from Beta Lyrae's Bayer designation. In Bayer designation, the name begins with a Greek letter followed by a genitive of the constellation's name.
This constellation contained the variable star RR Lyrae, which was the class star for the RR Lyrae variable stars.
