The main computer (or central computer) was the primary computer aboard a starbase, starship, or other installation. The main computer was typically located inside a computer core.

When the USS Enterprise received a seemingly gibberish communication in 2267 from a source later determined to be Nomad, Lieutenant Uhura informed Captain Kirk that it was "impossible to get any clearer" from her station, Kirk had Uhura send the message to the analysis sector to have them study and decode it. In relaying her message, Uhura stated, "Analysis sector, channel 1, main computer, decode." (TOS: "The Changeling")

In 2366, the USS Enterprise-D suffered a series of control malfunctions and false sensor readings. Commander William T. Riker asked if their computer was daydreaming after Lieutenant Commander Data postulated that a Borg vessel detected on sensors had been a synthetically generated image. In the conference room, Captain Jean-Luc Picard stated that they were dealing with the potential breakdown of the main computer, but according to Data, the system automatically provided for self-correction, and as a result, there had not been a systems-wide technological failure on a starship in seventy-nine years. (TNG: "Evolution")

Later that year, after Gomtuu defended itself from an approaching D'deridex-class Romulan warbird by discharging a massive energy wave, the Enterprise was left with partial failure of the main computer. (TNG: "Tin Man")

In 2374, the main computer of the USS Voyager was stolen by pirates using a high-energy transporter beam, but was later recovered. (VOY: "Concerning Flight")
