Background information[]
Malibu has served as a location for several Star Trek episodes. The Risa beach scenes for the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine fifth season episode "Let He Who Is Without Sin..." were filmed there in 1996 and three scenes in the Star Trek: Enterprise first season episode "Broken Bow" were filmed there in 2001.
The Uxbridge house exteriors for the Star Trek: The Next Generation third season episode "The Survivors" were shot in Malibu.
When filming a scene with Monte Markham in "Let He Who Is Without Sin…", director Rene Auberjonois picked out a small bank on the Malibu beach for extras to stand on. However, when they got to the spot, they discovered it was covered in tackburrs, making standing still exceptionally difficult, and prolonging the shoot considerably. (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion, p. ?)
The shoot for "Let He Who Is Without Sin…" very unusually long, with Terry Farrell commenting: "We had two days out on the beach in Malibu, which was great. We don't get do that very often on DS9. We also had some incredibly long shooting days. I had a 20-hour day after a 17-hour day, which came after a 15-hour day". (The Official Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Magazine issue 18)
The "Broken Bow' scenes were filmed on 19 June 2001 and the call sheet has the note "Be prepared for weather, bugs, and sand". The first scene, scene 32, was the exterior classroom of Hoshi Sato and her students in a jungle like atmosphere which stood in for Brazil. The second scene, scene 33, includes a jungle path and a conversation between Scott Bakula and Linda Park. The beach scenes in which Marty Davis and Mark Moses, and later also Jolene Blalock, participated were shot on a windy beach in Malibu. One of the first tasks of the day included to find a single tree on the windy beach which can be seen at the end of the episode. The scenes which were shot at the beach are scene 144 – 150 and 231. Lisa White served as location manager for this location.
