An override, manual override, or mutual override was an automated system, such as a computer where manual control was given to a person.

In 2366, a control malfunction led to the USS Enterprise-D drifting into the path of stellar matter. With thirty seconds until impact, Captain Jean-Luc Picard ordered manual override on deflector shields. Later, ship sensors indicated the approach of a Borg vessel, but shields were not responding and manual override was jammed. Even later, Commander William T. Riker switched to manual control of the air handling system after an environmental system malfunction released nitrogen oxide onto the bridge. (TNG: "Evolution")
