Marcela Coto worked as Production Assistant on the 2013 sequel Star Trek Beyond, directed by J.J. Abrams. According to the IMDb, Coto worked as Previsualization Coordinator for Proof Inc. on the 2016 sequel Star Trek Beyond, helmed by Justin Lin. In the latter function she had to closely cooperate with Erin M. Davis, her counterpart at Kelvin Optical, Inc., which held the overall responsibility for the smooth coordination of the visual effects (VFX) work done by all the VFX companies working on the film.
Coto first received credit in 2008 when she worked as grip on the short comedy Collecting Canada and as cinematographer on the short drama Be Somebody. In 2010 she worked as assistant editor and assistant camera operator on the short documentary Beautiful Darling, which featured Julie Newmar. Coto also worked as writer and director on the short comedy Marvin the Matador (2010) and in the camera department on the short science fiction film Xxit (2011, stunt coordination by Tim Gilbert) and on the short drama Stayed For (2012). On Susan Chau's short drama Josephine (2013), Coto was executive producer.
Since 2013, Coto has been working in the Special and Visual Effects department, first as production assistant on the superhero sequel Iron Man 3 (2013, with William Sadler, Miguel Ferrer, Tom Virtue, and Stan Lee) and on the science fiction thriller Snowpiercer (2013), then as visual effects junior coordinator on the Marvel sequel Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014, art direction by Steve Christensen, Beat Frutiger, and Gary Kosko).
More recently, Coto worked as Post-Visualization Coordinator fpr Proof Inc. on the sequels Furious Seven (2015, with Dwayne Johnson and Jon Lee Brody, music by Brian Tyler, cinematography by Stephen F. Windon, and costume design by Sanja Milkovic Hays) and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend (2015, executive produced by Ralph Winter).
