Marseille was a city in France on Earth. It was located at the Mediterranean Sea and featured a harbor.
Tom Paris' favorite bar, Chez Sandríne, as well as an establishment of Starfleet Academy, was located there. (VOY: "The Cloud", "Non Sequitur", "Someone to Watch Over Me")
In an alternate timeline in which Harry Kim never joined the crew of USS Voyager, Paris' service record indicated that his last known location was Marseille. When he told Libby where he was going and whom he was going to see, Paris, this confused her, as she thought he meant the city of Paris. After Kim met with him, Admiral Strickler asked why he traveled there. (VOY: "Non Sequitur")
As a nod to Paris' last name, the Photons Be Free character based on Paris was named "Lt. Marseilles" by The Doctor. (VOY: "Author, Author")
