Mashed potatoes were a Terran delicacy made from a potato. The potatoes were cooked, then pulverized, and blended with dairy products, such as milk and butter, and salt. It can be used as a side dish.

While stranded aboard Shuttlepod 1 in 2151, Charles Tucker ate a ration pack that consisted of meatloaf with gravy and mashed potatoes. Lieutenant Malcolm Reed later used some of Tucker's potatoes to temporarily seal a breach in the shuttlepod's hull. (ENT: "Shuttlepod One")

Later that year, while stranded on the Torothan homeworld, Jonathan Archer offered to have Chef to make Tucker "a dinner you'll never forget," upon their return to Enterprise NX-01. When asked what he wanted, Tucker stated that he wanted prime rib with a side of mashed potatoes, with mushroom gravy, with another side of broccoli, and for dessert, pecan pie. (ENT: "Desert Crossing")

When Kes underwent premature elogium due to space-dwelling lifeforms in 2371, she had an intense craving for certain foods. She ate six bowls of mashed potatoes with butter, a dish introduced to her by Samantha Wildman. When Neelix sampled her "snack", he found them unappealing. However, Kes neglected to mention that she had mixed in a container of nitrogenated soil. (VOY: "Elogium")

After taking his "handling fee" of two replicator rations from the Paris Radiogenic Sweepstakes, in 2372, Tom Paris considered having prime rib with mashed potatoes and creamed spinach, along with some Yorkshire pudding and a raktajino with whipped cream on top. (VOY: "Meld")

In 3190, Ruon Tarka replicated a dish of cold mashed potatoes and a single pea to model the Dark Matter Anomaly for Saru and Paul Stamets, and display the importance of "getting our hands dirty." (DIS: "The Examples")

Background information[]

Regarding its use in "Shuttlepod One", the Star Trek Encyclopedia, 4th ed., vol. 2, p. 25 notes: "If a shuttlepod was pressurized to 15 PSI (Earth sea level), and if there was a hole in the hull was 1/8 inch in diameter, the pressure on the hole would be less than 3 ounces. We think it's reasonable that mashed potatoes could resist that force, at least for a little while, especially if there were any chunks of potato in the mash. (We checked with a NASA engineer, who pointed out that mashed potatoes would freeze in space, which would further help it to keep air in.) By the way, Trip's mashed potatoes were prepared by Star Trek: Enterprise food stylist Dorothy Duder, who provided most of the edible props on that show."
