M'talas Prime, or simply M'talas, also sometimes spelled as Matalas, was the inhabited prime planet of the M'talas system. It was noted for its ringed moons. The populated areas of the planet were divided into districts, including District Six and District Seven. (ENT: "Dawn"; PIC: "The Next Generation")

History[]

Doctor Phlox was once nearly overwhelmed by fifty patients in a refugee camp on M'talas. In a correspondence with Doctor Jeremy Lucas in 2151, Phlox recalled this incident in relation to his being asked to take responsibility for the health of over fifty million Valakians. (ENT: "Dear Doctor")

The Enterprise NX-01 visited M'talas Prime during its historic mission of exploration in the mid-22nd century. In 2152, while stranded on an uninhabited and rapidly heating moon with an Arkonian named Zho'Kaan, Commander Charles Tucker III reminisced about some of the experiences he had while on Enterprise, including seeing the ringed moons of M'talas Prime. La Sirena in District Six

In 2401, Commander Raffi Musiker was assigned to an undercover mission in District Six on M'talas Prime as part of Operation: Daybreak. She uncovered a plot to destroy the Starfleet recruitment center in District Seven using experimental weapons stolen from Daystrom Station, but was unable to warn the authorities in time to prevent the attack. Subsequent investigation revealed that the attack was masterminded by renegade Changelings as a diversion from their true plans against the Federation. (PIC: "The Next Generation", "Imposters")

Background information[]

The name of this planet was a "tip-of-the-hat" to executive producer Brannon Braga's assistant and Star Trek: Enterprise writer, Terry Matalas. (Star Trek Encyclopedia (4th ed., vol. 2, p. 26)) The same Matalas went on to become showrunner on Star Trek: Picard.

Matalas stated on Twitter that the planet seen in "The Next Generation" was intended to be the same planet referenced in Star Trek: Enterprise. [1] He also noted that it was far outside Federation jurisdiction and still used currency. [2]

In an interview with Trekmovie.com, Matalas added, "I think it was Chris Black who came up with it on Enterprise. The idea was to name the most horrible place in the galaxy after me. The most vile place in the galaxy was of course named "Matalas". So on Picard when we were trying to name a place for sort of the epicenter of organized crime in the galaxy, somebody said, “Shouldn’t it be named after that vile place named for you?" [3]

On his Twitter, production designer Dave Blass shared behind the scenes photographs of M'Talas Prime's shops and streets. Art Direction was by Kit Stølen and set decoration by Shauna Aronson. [4]
