Mattel, Inc. is one of the world's largest toy manufacturers and is best known for the production of Barbie dolls, among many other popular toys and games.
Mattel is the parent company of Fisher-Price (the current producers of View-Master viewers), Tyco (a radio-controlled vehicle specialist), Radica Games (a hand-held electronic gaming company best known for its 20Q games), Mega Bloks (a construction toy producer), and Hot Wheels (a diecast vehicle manufacturer). It also owned Corgi for a number of years.
Star Trek releases[]
In the late 1990s, Mattel received a limited-term license to produce Star Trek-related toys and games. Between 1996 and 2000, four Mattel products were produced under this license:
- Barbie & Ken Star Trek Giftset
- Star Trek 30th Anniversary Barbie & Ken Collector Timepiece
- Star Trek Trivia Game
- Star Trek UNO
During the development of the 2009 Star Trek film, Mattel reacquired licensing to produce Star Trek merchandise. In 2009 and 2010, numerous scaled vehicles were released under the Hot Wheels and Tyco brands and three Star Trek Barbie & Ken dolls were produced. Released games included Star Trek Scene It? and Star Trek Edition 20Q.
Mattel's Hot Wheels brand also produced more starship miniatures (principally) related to Star Trek Into Darkness in 2013 and it continued to release starships and wheeled vehicles in 2014 and 2015.
More Mega Bloks sets and diecast starships and vehicles were released in 2016, alongside Kirk, Spock, and Uhura Barbie dolls, to commemorate Star Trek's 50th anniversary. In 2023, it released a commemorative set of "Little People" Original Series figures. [3] That same year, as part of their UNO FANDOM collection, they released a second STAR TREK: The Original Series UNO card game.
