That was, however, the only time McCoy ever desired to be a mechanic. The following year, when Captain James T. Later, in 2269, when McCoy, Kirk and Spock were held prisoner by the Vians, but held in their possession a Vian control unit, Spock began investigating the device in order understand its operating principles. When Spock assumed that he would be next to go with the Vians, he explained to McCoy that he had recorded his principles and theories on the tricorder, explaining that there was sufficient data there for he and the Captain to complete the necessary adjustments to make it work. McCoy's response, was, however that "I'm not a mechanic. I couldn't get that thing to work no matter how many notes you left." Spock concurred, adding, "but you and the captain together will be able to do so." (TOS: "The Empath")

Later when Jadzia Dax was sent to repair the replicators in Quark's, as she owed Nog a favor, Quark was disgusted by the thought of what she was doing, stating, "but that's work for a mechanic, a repairman, a lowly engineer." Dax retorted that "I'll tell Chief O'Brien you said that." (DS9: "Valiant")
