Data: A Machine

A machine, also known as machinery, mechanism, mechanical device, mechanical apparatus, or apparatus, was, at its simplest, a mechanical device used for applying force. A compound machine, consisting of many simple machines, was powered by electric or mechanical force and worked at a higher speed.

A machine made work easier by reducing the cost, time, and individual effort and was designed to perform one or more operations. It increased the efficiency of individual effort.

As dreams became more important than reality to the Talosians, they lost the skills needed to repair the machines left behind by their ancestors. (TOS: "The Cage")

Although Leonard McCoy did say individuals were machines, he denied saying to James T. Kirk that individuals were ultimately superior to mechanical devices. (TOS: "The Corbomite Maneuver")

In 2267, a spore infected Elias Sandoval described his settlement on the planet Omicron Ceti III as having a simple philosophy where people returned to a less complicated life with few mechanical things, no vehicles, and no weapons. (TOS: "This Side of Paradise")

That same year, Spock stated that Jackson Roykirk's dream was to build a perfect thinking machine, capable of independent logic. The result was the prototype Nomad, the best thinking machine that could be engineered which was launched in the early 2000s. (TOS: "The Changeling")

The Ba'ku of planet Ba'ku believed that something was taken away from a man when a machine was created for doing the work of a man. (Star Trek: Insurrection)
