According to the script for "The Wire", the pronunciation for Merak was "MARE-ak". However, according to StarTrek.com, the pronunciation for Merak was "MARE-ack".
According to StarTrek.com, the star Merak (Bayer designation Beta Ursae Majoris) has been known since antiquity on Earth. This star system was located about 78 light years from the Sol system. Merak II was a M-class planet.
According to Star Trek: Star Charts (p. 47, "United Federation of Planets III") and Stellar Cartography: The Starfleet Reference Library ("Federation Historical Highlights, 2161-2385"), the Merak (Beta Ursae Majoris) system was located in the Alpha Quadrant. This was a binary system with a pair of A-class stars.
According to FASA's The Federation sourcebook, Merak II is the second planet in the Latis Cyrtiva system.
