Merlin was the name of a figure in Human mythology, usually described as a mighty wizard in Britain during Earth's Dark Ages.
It was later revealed, in 2269, that the immortal Flint was indeed the former Merlin. (TOS: "Requiem for Methuselah")
Merlin is mentioned in the novel "Strangers from the Sky" by the being Parneb, who exists outside of time, aging in reverse. This trait is actually attributed to Merlin, explaining that Merlin knew the future because he was born there, aged in reverse, and died in the past. In the novel, Parneb states that Merlin is a "prisoner of time" just like himself.
