A metallurgical scientist was a scientist specializing in the field of metallurgy, and who was responsible for the study of metals and alloys.

In 2373, Voth molecular paleontologist Forra Gegen was reassigned to a job as a metallurgical scientist for his contributions to the Distant Origin Theory. (VOY: "Distant Origin")

Due to the location of the raw materials within the mantles or crusts of planets and asteroids, detailed education and study in the fields of geology and chemistry are required for success in this vocation. As a paleontologist, Forra Gegen had this expertise, and as such, was suited, if not over-qualified for the position of metallurgical analyst.
