A military, also known as military forces, defense forces, or armed forces, were a group organized for conflict, making use of military technology in the name of a government.
Militaries were frequently divided into separate services or branches with differing operational expertise. Military personnel were usually organized hierarchically, rank often indicated by distinct uniforms and insignia.

An air force was a division of a military which was generally responsible for airborne operations conducted from land. This included operating and maintaining aircraft and ballistic missiles. Many militaries of Earth maintained air forces.

A navy was the branch military forces principally designated for lake- or ocean-borne combat operations and related functions. Many traditions that originated in the early Earth-based navies were still adhered to by Starfleet in the 23rd century. A submarine service was a navy branch that operated submarines.
The Starfleet rank structure was the same as that used by the navy of the 20th century United States of America.

It was not until the second season of Star Trek: Discovery that it was established that prime universe Section 31 also possessed military capabilities as early as the 23rd century. The military capabilities of alternate reality Section 31 were already established in Star Trek Into Darkness.
