Prometheus deploys its multi-vector assault mode

A Romulan Warbird is destroyed

Multi-vector assault mode was developed by Starfleet and deployed in the 2370s. Multi-vector assault mode used advanced compartmentalization and automation systems to allow a ship to separate into multiple warp-capable craft. The resulting squadron operated semi-independently and could attack targets in concert. The squadron potentially brought greater firepower to bear as more surface area and weapons were exposed by separating the ship.

The Template:ShipClass starship was designed to use multi-vector assault mode. Until 2374 the concept was untested until USS Prometheus unintentionally engaged in combat against both Starfleet and Romulan forces.

Prometheus-class Usage

The computer would go to blue alert and initiate a ten-second countdown in preparation for separation. Separation was possible both at sublight and warp speeds. The saucer section detached, deploying two small warp nacelles; one on the dorsal side just behind the bridge, and the other in the same location on the ventral side of the saucer. The secondary hull split on the X-axis into two parts, each with two nacelles. Each section could be piloted manually, or be computer-controlled to execute pre-programmed attack patterns. The ship could reassemble into a single unit automatically.

The first deployment of multi-vector assault mode occurred while USS Prometheus was under Romulan control, and the ship successfully crippled the Template:ShipClass USS Bonchune. The second deployment occurred after the ship was retaken by Starfleet and destroyed a damaged Template:ShipClass Romulan warbird with help from an Template:ShipClass and two Template:ShipClass starships. (VOY: "Message in a Bottle").

A mod for the game Star Trek: Bridge Commander is available that gives user-created (also considered mods) starships the ability to separate if they are capable of such a function. A version of the Prometheus-class is available that includes the MVAM capability, as is a version of the Galaxy-class. Other ships are available with the ability as well.
