The Mutara sector was a region of Federation space in the Beta Quadrant. It bordered the Tango and Zalkon sectors. This sector was named after the Mutara system. Sector 25712 was near this sector.

The Genesis sector, a subsector within this sector, contained two planets, Genesis and a ringed planet, and their sun,

History[]

In 2257, Spock's shuttle disappeared in the Mutara sector after leaving Starbase 5. (DIS: "Light and Shadows")

In 2285, Khan Noonien Singh, aboard the hijacked USS Reliant, detonated the Genesis Device within the Mutara Nebula, creating the short-lived Genesis planet. As a result of the incident, travel in and out of the sector was restricted by Starfleet. Additional permits were required, making commercial and non-military travel more difficult and more expensive. (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan; Star Trek III: The Search for Spock)

Stellar cartography[]

In the 2380s, a section of the holographic map of the Alpha and Beta Quadrants, displayed to the former prisoners of Tars Lamora aboard the USS Protostar, was labeled as this sector. (PRO: "Starstruck")

This sector's quadrant of origin was inferred based on the position of Spock's last known position as seen in the star chart appearing in the Star Trek: Discovery episode "An Obol for Charon".
In the Star Trek Encyclopedia, the SS Botany Bay was either discovered by the USS Enterprise at a position near this sector (4th ed., vol. 1, p. 98) or in this sector (4th ed., vol. 2, p. 60).
In the episode "Twilight", it was stated that Rigelian flamegems were illegal in a region. This region was identified as this sector by the Encyclopedia. (4th ed., vol. 2, p. 60)
