A newcomer was someone who was new to a place, while those who were new to an activity were known as an amateur, beginner, novice, or greenhorn. Beginners who did above expectations on their first attempt at achieving their particular goal were said to have "beginner's luck". A beginner in a particular sport was known as a rookie.
Following his first time landing USS Voyager on a planet's surface, Tom Paris was complimented by Captain Kathryn Janeway for his success, "not bad, for a beginner." (VOY: "The 37's")
