An octonary star system was a planetary system containing eight stars. The gravitational mechanics of such a system would be incredibly complex, and the probability of one forming naturally was close to zero. Until 2399, no octonaries like this were known to anyone within the Federation. However, there were other kinds of octonary systems. These systems were divided into components of multiple star systems and individual stars, for example, the Beta Lyrae system.
