Ophiuchus (Latin for serpent holder) was a large constellation visible from Earth's northern hemisphere. The brightest star in the constellation was Rasalhague; the nearest star to Sol in the constellation was Barnard's Star. Astronomical objects in this constellation were located in the Alpha Quadrant. The name of this constellation was derived from Sabik's Bayer designation. In Bayer designation, the name begins with a Greek letter followed by a genitive of the constellation's name.
The serpent holder was Asclepius, who was the Greek god of doctors, medicine, and healing.
