According to Federation definitions from at least the early 2360s, organic, which related to the term organism, was an adjective which described carbon-based lifeforms or compounds. As Beverly Crusher and other members of the USS Enterprise-D made clear, organic did not mean simply "something that was alive", as inorganic life was possible. (TNG: "Home Soil")

Some species, such as the Breen and Species 8472 used organic-based vessels. (VOY: "Scorpion")

The term "organics" was sometimes used by sentient holograms as a derogatory term referring to their non-artificial creators. (VOY: "Revulsion", "Flesh and Blood") The Doctor's original version of his Photons Be Free program ended with the narrator stating "I hope you now have a better understanding of the struggles holograms must endure in a world controlled by organics." (VOY: "Author, Author")

Examples and properties[]

Plasma coolant reacts violently with organic material, liquifying it on contact. (Star Trek: First Contact)

The shapeshifting locket Odo received from the Rakhari Croden was identified by Doctor Julian Bashir as an amalgam of organic matter and a sort of a crystal. (DS9: "Vortex")

In 2375, Bashir claimed that the Holy Grail of organ replacement would be to come up with a way to inject the patient with undifferentiated tissue that could become whatever organ is needed. He had hoped that he could "borrow a cup of goo" from Odo, so as to study the Changeling's morphogenic matrix, in effort to find the means required to synthesize organic tissue that can change form the way Changeling cells do. (DS9: "When It Rains...")
