Orion embassy outpost on Qo'noS

The Orion embassy outpost

The Orion outpost was an embassy outpost on Qo'noS, operated by the Orions on land given to them by the Klingons. It was built over the ruins of a shrine to Molor, which was situated atop one of the vents leading to the planet's underground volcano system.

The outpost served as a center for black market and other unscrupulous activities for individuals of many species, including arms dealing, gambling, and prostitution. Tattooing and gormagander meat were also available at the outpost. (DIS: "Will You Take My Hand?")

In the 2230s, a Section 31 operative informed Leland that a time crystal would be entering the black market near the Orion outpost. (DIS: "The Red Angel")

In 2257, a USS Discovery team consisting of Michael Burnham, Sylvia Tilly, Ash Tyler, and Philippa Georgiou infiltrated the outpost, ostensibly to map the surface of Qo'noS in preparation for an attack. However, the real mission, known only to Georgiou, was to detonate a hydro bomb in the volcano system, so as to cause a phreatic eruption that would render Qo'noS uninhabitable. (DIS: "Will You Take My Hand?")

According to Star Trek: Discovery Production Designer Tamara Deverell, it was she herself who thought up the idea of having the Orion outpost on Qo'noS feature a black market. "I think I suggested to them, 'Let's make it a market. Let's make it a black market, because it gives us something to dress to, and a little more exciting,'" she recalled. The staff writers subsequently approved of this, embellishing the conceived outpost by deciding the black market should include a sex cabaret. ("Designing Discovery", DIS Season 1 DVD & Blu-ray special features) To create the Orion outpost, the DIS art department did a series of concept illustrations for what it would be. "We had a Klingon drinking tent and we made all these different stalls," recalled Deverell. [1] She concluded, "I couldn't have done it without the set dressers, because there are so many layers."
