An Osmotic eel is a small aquatic life-form resembling a starfish, which is some times used for it's leech-like abilities suck fluids from humanoids
Doctor Phlox kept an osmotic eel aboard during his assignment to Enterprise, and it could often be seen in sickbay in a container of water. During their first mission, it was used to cauterize Captain Archer's leg wound in April 2151. (ENT: "Broken Bow").
