Oxidation is the combining of an element with oxygen. This often resulted in the material's deterioration resulting in rust or tarnish.

In 2371, the crew of USS Voyager detected this result of this process in open space while traversing the Delta Quadrant. Its detection raised the question, from Captain Janeway, "how could iron rust in space without oxygen?" (VOY: "The 37's")
