A particle was a small object to which could be ascribed multiple physical or chemical properties such as volume, density, mass, toxicity, or combustibility. Particles varied in size or quantity, from subatomic particles like electrons, to microscopic particles like atoms and molecules, to larger macroscopic particles like powders and other granular materials or matter like sand.
In 2269, the misty cosmic cloud creature acted like a macromorphase enzyme which would have corroded the hull of the USS Enterprise and the crew would have been broken down into nice digestable particles if the ship's deflector shields didn't stay up. (TAS: "One of Our Planets Is Missing")
