The phaser range was a facility aboard some starships that allowed Starfleet personnel to practice aiming and firing their phasers. It consisted of a circular stage set in a large empty area. The area around the stage was illuminated, but every other area of the room was dark. Flashing spheres of light of different colors and moving at various speeds served as the targets. Two people could be accommodated in the range at any one time. (TNG: "A Matter Of Honor", "Redemption") By 2381, the phaser range on at least one ship featured drones as the targets, rather than light-based spheres. (LD: "wej Duj")
When first arriving aboard Deep Space 9, Julian Bashir asked Odo if the station had an area where he could practice with his phaser. (DS9: "Emissary")
Guinan liked to practice on the USS Enterprise-D's phaser range, and did so at a higher difficulty setting than Lieutenant Worf. (TNG: "Redemption")
In 2381, Ensign Beckett Mariner invited fellow ensigns Brad Boimler and Sam Rutherford to join her on the USS Cerritos's phaser range, saying that she needed "moving targets". Later that year, Mariner and her mother, Captain Carol Freeman, used the phaser range during their "mother-daughter time" together, and spent the time bickering with each other during target practice.
