Among the military units involved was the 102nd New York Infantry, commanded by Colonel Thaddius "Old Iron Boots" Riker. Colonel Riker was injured in the fighting and carried back from the front line by a then unknown soldier.
Over five hundred years later, during a character witness hearing orchestrated by Q, a descendant of Thaddius Riker, William T. Riker, recalled Sherman's March when describing the history behind the image of Thaddius Riker and the unknown soldier who saved him during the battle. It was only then that the unknown soldier was revealed to have been Quinn, another Q. (VOY: "Death Wish")
