A place was an area with unique physical and species-oriented characteristics.

In 1836, during the Battle of the Alamo, the Mexican Army, under the command of Antonio López de Santa Anna, came over the north wall of the Alamo and defeated the defenders of the Alamo. Centuries later, when studying the battle by using a scale model of the Alamo compound, Julian Bashir considered strengthening the north wall, the south wall, and any other place of the Alamo so as to keep the enemy out and give the defenders of the Alamo a chance of winning. (DS9: "The Changing Face of Evil")

In 2254, when he considered resigning from Starfleet, Captain Christopher Pike contemplated what life would be like in other places. He could go home to Mojave or he could enter into business on Regulus or the Orion colony. (TOS: "The Cage")

In 2265, the mutant Gary Mitchell knew the USS Enterprise was in orbit around Delta Vega. He informed his friend Captain James T. Kirk that he might not want to leave the ship and that he might want another place, such as a planet, where he could use his newly acquired powers. (TOS: "Where No Man Has Gone Before")

In 2266, Ruth Bonaventure identified the USS Enterprise sickbay as a place, wondering what it looked like. She found it fascinating. (TOS: "Mudd's Women")

In 2378, Captain Kathryn Janeway told Lieutenant Reginald Barclay that he earned a place in the history books for establishing the first trans-galactic com-link during Operation Watson. Barclay claimed he couldn't take all the credit since Harry Kim and Seven of Nine suggested bouncing a tachyon beam off of a quantum singularity to make it work.

Janeway noted that centuries beforehand in most places on Earth, only landowners of a particular gender and race had any rights. (VOY: "Author, Author")
