A planetary scan or planetary surface scan was a scan report showing a structure or landscape or the environment on a planet.
In 2151, Trip Tucker performed a planetary surface scan to get a proper picture of the tunnel and cavern network beneath the surface of Terra Nova. He identified 12.6 kilometers worth of tunnels and fifty-two biosigns.
