A pointer
A pointer was a long rod with a pointed end, used to indicate a particular location or detail on a map or chart.
In an alternate timeline in which Nazi Germany had invaded the United States, a pointer was used to indicate various locations of interest in the latter country. (ENT: "Storm Front", "Storm Front, Part II")
In 2267, a pointer was used to show the trail of mass insanity spreading from Beta Portolan to Levinius V, Theta Cygni XII, Ingraham B, and ultimately Deneva. (TOS: "Operation -- Annihilate!")
