The price of something was the amount in money that someone had to pay in order to buy it.

In 2266, Captain James T. Kirk was authorized to pay an equitable price for six lithium crystals from the Rigel XII miners. As the miners were opposed to a sale, as they instead preferred a swap, no payment was offered for the crystals and they were obtained by other means. (TOS: "Mudd's Women")
