A prison ship or penal deportation vessel was a type of transport ship that acted as a penal facility. Most times, such vessels were used to ferry criminals from one prison or detention facility to another to serve out their sentence.

At least one Klingon D7-class ship was used as a prison ship during the Federation-Klingon War in the late 2250s. (DIS: "Choose Your Pain")
In 2267, Spock rebutted James T. Kirk's thought that the SS Botany Bay might be a penal deportation vessel. He felt that given the chaos of the time, it would be inefficient to waste such a spaceship for that purpose. When Kirk asked him for an alternate theory, he replied that, lacking any facts, he could not come up with one. (TOS: "Space Seed")
Deanna Troi, while portraying Major Rakal on the IRW Khazara, claimed that she had tasted better viinerine on prison ships when told by Commander Toreth that she should have tried it. (TNG: "Face Of The Enemy")
Prison ships operated by the Nygeans were used in such a fashion. (VOY: "Repentance")
