A psychotronic stability examination was a test used to gauge an individual's psychological reaction to the images a computer projected. It was a required test for all Starfleet cadets prior to graduation from Starfleet Academy.
In 2365, Counselor Deanna Troi conducted a psychotronic stability exam on Data, following a series of insubordinate acts he had committed. The outcome of the exam determined that there were two distinct personalities contained within Data, the dominant of which was that of Dr. Ira Graves. (TNG: "The Schizoid Man")
