Punk referred to a member of a counterculture that evolved on Earth in the 20th century. It also referred to the style of rock music that punks played and listened to. Punks that listened to acid punk were usually called acid punkers. A homeless punk was usually referred to as a "street punk." (LD: "Crisis Point 2: Paradoxus")
One band associated with Punk was The Slits. (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home)
In 1986, a punk on a bus in San Francisco mistook Captain Spock for a hippie. When Admiral James T. Kirk asked for him to turn down his music ("I Hate You" by Edge of Etiquette), the punk flipped Kirk "the bird". Spock used a Vulcan nerve pinch to subdue the punk and turn off his music, inciting grateful applause from the other passengers. (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home) This punk was later encountered by Seven of Nine and Raffaela Musiker in Los Angeles in 2024. Though he was once again playing music loudly on a bus, he was much more agreeable when asked to turn it down. (PIC: "Watcher")
In 1996, several punks were seen on a Los Angeles beach by Captain Kathryn Janeway and her away team. (VOY: "Future's End")
In 2268, when Bela Okmyx was explaining to Captain Kirk about being the boss of his territory on Sigma Iotia II, he told him the trouble was "there's always some punk trying to cut you out." He later tried to talk Kirk into handing over some "heaters" that he could use in his war against the rival gangsters. He told him with that kind of weaponry, he'd have "enough tools so I could knock off those punks all at once." (TOS: "A Piece of the Action")
In 2381, Ensigns Beckett Mariner and D'Vana Tendi both enjoyed listening to punk music together. They mainly liked listening to acid punk, especially Klingon acid punk. (LD: "We'll Always Have Tom Paris")
