A rebellion, uprising, revolt, insurrection, or insurgency is open, organized, and usually armed, resistance against a government, ruler, or any other form of authority. The distinctions between a rebellion and a revolution are subtle, but a revolution is usually of more lasting significance, and is waged against a dominant status quo.

Selected examples

In the final revised draft of the script for "The Conscience of the King", a rebellion was once, in the script's stage directions, referred to as having taken place on Tarsus IV. However, in the final version of the episode, no such rebellion is established as having happened on that planet.
