Rebels is a trilogy of Pocket DS9 novels written by Daffyd ab Hugh [sic], first published by Pocket Books in 1999.
The series sees Sisko takes the USS Defiant to help liberate a conquered world. While he and the crew are gone, the Bajoran government insists that Kai Winn assume command of Deep Space 9. Kira has to stay on as her first officer.

- The author commemented, "Everybody hated Kai Winn (including me), so I decided to make much of the trilogy the story of what she did during the occupation, showing her as a real, bona fide hero... but one whose doom was that she had to allow the other Bajorans to imagine that she was a traitor because she was so deep undercover with the resistance that she couldn't let people know what she had done for them, even after the Cardassians were kicked out. I was hoping people would contrast the heroism of her youth with the circumstances of her middle age and decide that, well, maybe she had earned the right to be bitchy and authoritarian."
