HMS Victory model

A model of the HMS Victory, complete with rigging

On a sailing vessel, the rigging was the system of ropes and winches that support a vessel's masts and lift its sails. The term, "jury rigging" it attributed to this system.

As Geordi La Forge was making a model of the HMS Victory for his former captain, Zimbata, he strung all of the ship's rigging by hand, all along making him dream of actually handling the sails. (TNG: "Elementary, Dear Data";

After Sisko's lightship was propelled to warp speed, and the subsequent jolt broke Benjamin Sisko's sextant, he and Jake Sisko were temporarily lost in space. While attempting to determine where they ended up, Ben had his son check the rigging, to determine how much damage they had taken, resulting in the discovery of them having lost the jib and port main sail.
