Roman gods were deities worshiped on the planet 892-IV by the inhabitants of that world's Roman Empire. By the 23rd century, when the planet had attained a technology level equivalent to 20th century Earth, the names of several of the Roman gods had been commercialized and were used to promote sales products. (TOS: "Bread and Circuses")
By 2268, a widespread movement, known as the Children of the Son, actively denounced the Roman gods and instead preached a philosophy of peace and brotherhood. The movement was based largely on the teachings of 892-IV's version of a Jesus Christ figure, an entity known as the Son. (TOS: "Bread and Circuses")

Background[]
The names of the Roman gods mentioned in the episode all mirror Earth counterparts which were based on earlier Greek counterparts. Kirk and crew had actually encountered the god Apollo prior to this point, although Captain Kirk shows little reaction to the Roman gods when he learns of them. (TOS: "Who Mourns for Adonais?")
