The Romulan Guard was an organization within the Romulan Star Empire that was once Proconsul Neral's old service, in which he held the rank of uhlan. (TNG: "Unification II")
The term "Romulan Guard" was only used in "Unification II" as the designation of Neral's old service. The episode does not make it clear whether the term applies to the entire Romulan military, a branch of it, or another service entirely. The Star Trek Encyclopedia (3rd ed., p. 531) has no "Romulan Guard" entry, although it is mentioned in the definition of "uhlan" as "the Romulan guard", where only Romulan is in bold because it references the article on Romulans.
