He believed the necessity of military personnel to trust one another contrasted with the Tal Shiar's tendency to distrust their associates. (TNG: "Face of the Enemy")

Background information
The term "Romulan Guard" was only used in one episode, TNG: "Unification II", as the designation of Neral's old service. The episode does not make it clear whether the term applies to the entire Romulan military. The Star Trek Encyclopedia has no Romulan Guard entry, although it is mentioned in the definition of uhlan as "the Romulan guard".
In non-canon works, the forces of the Romulan Empire has been known as the Romulan Star Navy.
