The Romulan science vessel was a type of science vessel in service during the mid-24th century, which was used to conduct standard and experimental research for the Romulan Star Empire, and notably by the Romulan Astrophysical Academy. (TNG: "The Next Phase"; VOY: "Eye of the Needle")

In early-2350, the science vessel Talvath, operating under the direction of the Dr. Telek R'Mor began an extended three-year scientific mission. The following year, the Talvath encountered a micro-wormhole in Sector 1385 of the Alpha Quadrant. It was here that its crew discovered the USS Voyager, which was located in the Delta Quadrant, however, twenty-years in the future. (VOY: "Eye of the Needle")

There is no clear indication, either way, if this ship was intended to be the same class as had previously been established, or if the vessel merely shared the same designation.

While normally fitted with a cloaking device, in 2368, a science vessel tested a new experimental interphase cloaking device. The ship was ultimately assisted and repaired by the USS Enterprise-D. (TNG: "The Next Phase")

Dialogue from this episode stated a survivor count of only seventy-three. Therefore, based on the Romulan's grim reaction to this number, it might suggest that this class of vessel carried a much larger crew.

Engine core

The engine room section was located in the middle of the "head" of the science vessel. It contained a primary situation station in the center of the room, and associated consoles along the walls surrounding the room. The ship's engine core was located in the containment chamber, an adjacent room connected to the main engine room.

The core itself was a spherical in shape and contained within a small chamber which has a single open hatch. The room also contained the warp core ejection system's manual override, embedded in the floor. When ejected, the core is shot into space from the mid-dorsal section of the ship. (TNG: "The Next Phase")

According to the script, the engine room of the science vessel "is smaller than engineering on the Enterprise and should reflect very different ideas about engineering design and philosophy than those we are familiar with."

Background information Edit

According to the script, it was "about half the size of the Enterprise," suggesting a length of approximately three hundred meters.

For information on this studio model, see TNG studio models.

The studio model is a modification and reuse of the Romulan scout ship seen in The Next Generation episode "The Defector".
